In 2014, we started a special project: the automatic lubrication of racks and guides on the so-called Strauss bridges. A Strauss bridge is a type of bascule bridge that resembles the classic drawbridge but has a shorter counterweight at the back. The bridge opens by being lifted via a rack, driven by a motor with a gear.
These gears and racks are subjected to extremely heavy loads. In the past, they were lubricated manually, which had to be done while the bridge was in motion, a time consuming and risky task. Since regular lubrication is essential for reliable operation, the desire arose to automate this process: safer, more efficient, and with less workload for the maintenance team.
Automatic Lubrication with Environmentally Friendly Grease
After extensive research and testing, and in consultation with our Technical Director, we chose the biodegradable grease Green Point Open Gear Grease 0. This grease is highly pumpable and provides a strong, durable lubricating film.
We started with a test on one bridge. The results were convincing: stable lubrication, no dirt build-up, and smooth operation under all weather conditions. Subsequently, all bridges in the project were converted to the environmentally friendly Green Point grease.
The port of Antwerp
The Port of Antwerp wanted absolute certainty about performance. Therefore, the testing period lasted no less than 14 months, allowing the grease to be evaluated across all seasons. The performance was assessed on a monthly basis.
The result: a consistent, smooth lubricating film on the gears and guides — exactly what’s needed for a reliable lubrication process.
Extra Step: Automatic Lubrication of the Guide Rails
In addition to the gears, we also included the guide rails in the project. These provide support for the bridge during opening and closing. Previously, these rails were also lubricated manually — on the top, bottom, and sides. Now, the process is fully automatic, using the same biodegradable Green Point Open Gear Grease.
The result is a fully automated and environmentally friendly lubrication system that operates safely and significantly simplifies maintenance.
Swing Bridges at Sluiskil and Sas van Gent
We also carried out a successful automation project on the swing bridges of Sluiskil and Sas van Gent, located in the Ghent–Terneuzen Canal. These bridges date from the late 1960s and were due for a major overhaul. The old lubrication systems were no longer reliable. During the complete renovation (performed by a contractor), we fully renewed the lubrication section.
The bridges are now equipped with an automatic lubrication system with moving pinions that evenly distribute the grease across the full width of the rack. This ensures that every part of the drive system remains optimally lubricated.
This project uses Grizzly Grease 3 NLGI 2 from our supplier LUBCON — a robust, standard grease. In this case, a biodegradable variant was not required.
The Results: Safer, Cleaner, and More Reliable. With the transition to automatic lubrication, the following results have been achieved: Safer maintenance: no more manual lubrication during bridge movements. Reduced workload for maintenance teams. Consistent, optimal lubrication in all weather conditions Environmentally friendly solution using biodegradable grease where possible
Longer service life for racks, guides, and gears. The automation has not only resulted in more reliable bridge operation, but also in significant maintenance cost savings.
