Marine & Offshore
Reliable lubrication in challenging environments
Heavy loads in Marine & Offshore
In the Marine & Offshore sector, ships themselves, along with all their equipment and installations, are becoming increasingly larger and more impressive. This size brings with it heavy loads, combined with changing weather conditions and stricter environmental and safety regulations. Choosing the right lubricants and maintenance is a complex puzzle. These choices must not only be technically sound, but also financially feasible and meet increasingly high ecological standards. Do you recognise these challenges? Then you’ve come to the right place to learn how to best deal with them.
At Van Meeuwen, we believe sustainable business is maintaining equipment in a way it can perform at its best for as long as possible. High pressures and loads require top-quality oils and greases that are biodegradable where necessary and long-lasting, ensuring minimal consumption. Below is a selection of the applications on which our team’s expertise focuses.

Hydraulic systems
Enormous forces, high pressures, extreme precision. A reliable and efficient system is indispensable. A well-chosen, clean oil ensures optimal power build-up, protects various components, prevents cavitation and damage to pumps and valves, and reduces filter contamination. A hydraulic power pack is only as strong as its oil. By choosing the right quality and regularly measuring its condition (oil analysis), you can prevent problems and maintain maximum control over the performance of your installation.
Jacking systems
Good protection of the tooth flanks of racks and pinions is crucial for the sustainable use of jack-up vessels. This requires a grease that performs reliably and powerfully, especially under the most extreme conditions. Effective protection against wear, easy to use and, above all, low consumption thanks to good adhesion. Depending on the type of automatic lubrication system, there are several options available in the Van Meeuwen portfolio. Moreover, they meet stringent environmental requirements. This enables you to maintain sustainable and operational systems.
Stern Tubes
A large proportion of propeller shafts are oil-lubricated and, due to their design, show some degree of leakage. This makes high-quality seals and the right oil essential for long-term operation. One oil can damage your seals, while another is fully compatible with the sealing material. This means that there are various options available. Due to the high risk of leakage, it is essential that the oil is biodegradable, while protecting the propeller shaft is obviously the number one priority. There are also several options for grease-lubricated shafts.
Wire ropes
Wire ropes are subjected to considerable stress from moisture, movement, bending and heavy loads, which can cause wear and corrosion. The right (biodegradable) oil or grease creates a strong lubricating film that penetrates deeply, reduces friction and prevents wear. Additionally, some products are water-resistant and suitable for both fresh and salt water environments, ensuring your wire ropes remain optimally protected, regardless of the conditions.
Sustainable without compromising on quality
For us as lubrication specialists, the quality of lubricants determines the success of working sustainably. That’s why we’re committed to using high-quality biodegradable lubricants that have been proven to perform better than regular bio or standard lubricants. Many of our bio-lubricants are registered with the EU Ecolabel and classified as EAL (Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant). They also comply with important regulations such as the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP) and the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA).
