Paper Barriers
Paper Barriers
The demand for plastic-free and recyclable packaging is growing, and paper packaging plays an important role in this. However, paper alone does not always provide the desired protection that is required. Our functional paper barrier additives give paper exactly that extra functionality: water-repellent or grease-resistant, without affecting its recyclability.
We are more than happy to look into your challenge and offer customised solutions that suit your product and process. This is how we help make packaging more sustainable without compromising on performance.
Why paper barriers are important:
- To make packaging or paper products that are resistant to grease, drinks, moisture or vapour, such as food packaging or takeaway cups.
- To make paper suitable for food packaging, where plastic or foil would otherwise be required.
The benefits of Paper Barriers
- Barrier against grease and oil: Prevents oil or grease from soaking through the paper.
- Ultra-thin coating: The thinner the coating, the less material is used.
- Repulpability: The paper can be recovered in the paper cycle due to its thin, water-based coating.
- Water-based emulsion: More environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic sheeting
- Heat-tightness and heat-sealability: Suitable for packaging applications where high temperatures occur.
Suitable for many applications
We have various types of paper barriers available, depending on the application:
- Foodcare Paper Barrier EM02: Contains a high barrier against liquids, oils and fats. Suitable for heat-seal options, such as coffee cups.
- Foodcare Paper Barrier EM01: Suitable for folded paper packaging with a grease and oil barrier.
- Foodcare Primer: Suitable for improving adhesion and sealing properties.
- Foodcare Viscosity Modifier: Suitable for applying the correct coating and layer thickness to paper.
Some examples of paper barriers
Food packaging such as snack packaging and bakery boxes that require grease and oil resistance.
Takeaway packaging where a strong barrier against grease and oil is essential to prevent leakage.
Paper cups as a liquid barrier to prevent soaking.
Flowpack and Form-Fill-Seal packaging for dry food products, where protection is needed against oil seeping through or stains appearing on the paper.
